Corner Castings are robust corner blocks that are placed on the corners of containers. They are of great importance for the safe lifting, securing and stacking of sea containers. These corner blocks are made of high-quality cast steel (SCW480) and comply with the international ISO 1161:2016 standard. Thanks to their universal dimensions, they are widely applicable in container construction, offshore structures, trailers or mobile units.
The Corner Castings are suitable for building complete containers, performing repairs or integrating into custom-designed steel structures. Due to their standard dimensions, they are fully compatible with common twistlocks, such as the Dovetail BF-11 and the Intermediate IF-51. This allows containers or constructions to be safely secured on ships, pontoons or other surfaces.
Each Corner Casting is manufactured from cast steel type SCW480 and tested to a breaking strength of 500 kN (approximately 50 tons). They are supplied with a primer layer that provides protection against corrosion. The primer does not need to be removed for welding, although local grinding may be desirable under high welding tension.
With a weight of approximately 11 kg per piece, the corner blocks offer a solid foundation for intensive use under heavy conditions.
For engineers and designers, technical drawings are available in both PDF and STP format. This allows the corner blocks to be imported directly into 3D design software, which simplifies the design of custom constructions
Corner castings are the steel corner fittings of a sea container that contain the lifting and locking points. They're located on all eight corners of the container and form the standard connection points for twistlocks, lifting systems and other attachments.
They're used to lift, stack and secure containers. Corner castings also make custom constructions with container corners compatible with standard transport equipment.
For example, a steel frame with corner castings can be secured with twistlocks on a ship or trailer, just like a regular container.
A standard sea container has 8 corner castings: 4 at the top and 4 at the bottom.
Breakdown:
2x Top Left + 2x Top Right
2x Bottom Left + 2x Bottom Right
This layout means containers can be both stacked and secured. All locks and lifting systems engage at these points.
The difference lies in the position and the openings of the corner fitting. Top and bottom corner castings have different cutouts because they serve different functions.
top corner castings → for lifting and stacking from above
bottom corner castings → for placement, locking and transport
Because of this difference, twistlocks and other couplings only fit correctly when the right variant is used.
Yes, corner castings are standardized worldwide under ISO 1161. This means they have the same dimensions and openings, regardless of manufacturer or container type.
As a result:
all twistlocks fit every container
containers can be stacked and transported worldwide
they're suitable for custom constructions
This standard makes it possible to combine systems from different suppliers without modification.
The choice depends on the application:
loose corner castings → for replacing or repairing one corner
set of 4 → for the top or bottom of a structure
set of 8 → for building a complete container or frame
For custom constructions, a set of 4 is often used, so a frame is immediately suitable for stacking or locking.
Corner castings are made of heavy cast steel and have a breaking strength of around 50 tonnes (500 kN). This makes them suitable for carrying the full weight of containers and the forces that occur during transport and stacking.
They're the strongest point on the container and are designed to absorb forces from:
lifting
stacking
locking
The strength is matched to international container transport.
