The MK-2 Container Lifting Lugs are suitable for vertically lifting containers equipped with ISO Corner Castings. The set consists of 4 lifting lugs. These are easily placed on the top side of a sea container. As a result, the lugs protrude slightly above the container on all four sides. This allows containers to be lifted diagonally when containers are positioned close to each other on a vessel. At angles between 0° and 15°, the lifting lugs have a total breaking strength of 56 T.
A complete set of Container Lifting Lugs consists of 4 lifting eyes that are placed in the 4 upper ISO Corner Castings of the container. The weight of a container is evenly distributed across all four lifting lugs. The lifting eyes have a diameter of 45 mm, allowing lifting equipment to be attached easily and securely.
A set of 4 lifting lugs has a total breaking strength of 56 tons. This breaking strength corresponds to a safe workload (W.L.L.) of 14 tons per individual lifting lug. This allows fully loaded 20ft and 40ft containers with maximum permitted gross weight to be safely lifted. The rated breaking strength is achieved at angles between 0° and 15° between the lifting lug and lifting equipment. At larger angles, the forces are transferred to a different point, which reduces the effective breaking strength.
The lifting lugs are designed for vertical lifting of containers. Because the lifting lugs are placed on the top side of the container and protrude slightly, containers can be lifted without contact against each other. This also makes it possible to lift containers in tight spaces, such as on the deck of a vessel or in terminal operations.
Every container is equipped with corner castings. This is the standardized ISO name for the top corner blocks of a shipping container. Here, containers can be secured horizontally or vertically. The dimensions of the container and the corner castings are fully standardized. The major advantage of these standard dimensions is compatibility with all lifting accessories. For stacking containers, Intermediate Twistlocks can be used.
For lifting containers, only the MK-2 Lifting Lugs are suitable. Other types of lashing equipment, such as twistlocks, are not advised for lifting operations.
The MK-2 Container Lifting Lugs are designed to be placed on the top opening of the corner castings. Attaching and removing the lifting lugs is simple. Because containers are placed close together, the lifting lugs protrude slightly above the container. This enables safe diagonal lifting. The lifting lugs are specifically designed to fit into the corner castings according to the standard ISO norms.
Each lifting lug is equipped with a locking mechanism. This mechanism ensures that the lifting lug cannot shoot out of the corner casting during lifting. Locking occurs by placing the lug and performing a simple rotating motion. To remove the lifting lug, the lock can be opened manually. Removal is easy by rotating the lug relative to the container.
