What are seal pliers, and what do you use them for?

Seal pliers crimp a lead seal shut around seal wire. The wire first passes through the opening to be sealed, for example a meter or cabinet, and then through the seal itself. The pliers then clamp the seal permanently in place. Once closed, it can't be opened without leaving visible damage.

What are lead seals, and what types are there?

There are four main types. Traditional lead seals are soft and leave a sharp, clear imprint. Plastic seals come in several colours, useful for quick recognition. Aluminium seals are harder and more resistant to weather and moisture. Hand-closing seals close by hand, with no pliers needed. Rolled seals are rolled around the wire with a dedicated tool, for extra strength.

Is sealing a meter cabinet mandatory?

Yes. Gas and electricity meters are sealed as standard by, or on behalf of, the grid operator. A private individual isn't allowed to replace this seal themselves. That's only permitted for a certified installer, instructed by or in coordination with the grid operator.

What is sealing with lead, pliers and wire used for?

Besides meter cabinets, this method is also used for technical installations, machinery, switch cabinets and equipment where it needs to be visible whether something has been opened. Think of maintenance hatches or cabinets with sensitive settings.

What's the difference between sealing with lead and with plastic?

Lead leaves a deep, clear imprint. Plastic comes in colours for quick recognition, and is lightweight and moisture-resistant. For outdoor use, aluminium seals combined with stainless steel seal wire are the most durable choice.
