During export, storage on a company site or a stopover in transit, a container needs to stay closed. A lock over the locking bars means the doors cannot be opened without tools and time. For shipping and storage containers, there are certified locks as well as simpler versions.

A container lock fits over the locking bars of the container doors. This stops the bars from turning, so the doors stay closed. A padlock secures a shackle or hasp. Some container locks, such as the Cobra Container Lock, combine both: the padlock sits protected inside the housing of the container lock.
Yes. Locks can be keyed alike by the manufacturer, so one key fits several locks. A master key system is also possible. Each key then opens its own lock, while a master key opens every lock in the system. This lets a fleet or terminal keep track of who can open which lock.
