The Dovetail Twistlock BF-11 is a practical solution to quickly and safely lock a sea container from the underside. In combination with the Deck Socket DF-31, it creates a removable and user-friendly twistlock system for containers, bulk carriers or custom constructions. The BF-11 is available in both left- and right-locking versions and is designed for heavy-duty use in demanding environments.
The Dovetail Twistlock BF-11 is placed onto the four corner points of a container. By turning the handle, the twistlock locks into the container’s corner casting. This creates a secure connection to the deck or a steel construction. Thanks to its robust construction, the twistlock is suitable for both transport and storage of containers.
The BF-11 can be easily slid into and out of the Deck Socket DF-31. This base plate is permanently welded to the deck, while the twistlock itself remains removable. This is ideal for situations with alternating loads: containers can be firmly secured, while at other times different cargo can be transported without obstacles on the deck. Vehicles can drive over the low-profile Deck Socket DF-31 without issue.
You can choose between the left-locking or right-locking BF-11. The functionality of both versions is identical. Many users combine both types so that the handles point inward for correct locking. If you prefer simplicity and speed, choose four twistlocks of the same type. This prevents mix-ups and reduces the chance of user error.
The Dovetail Twistlock BF-11 is made from ZG45 cast steel with a hot-dip galvanized finish. This ensures excellent resistance to seawater, rust and wear. The twistlock remains easy to operate thanks to the internal manganese insert and sealed bearing that prevent the handle from rotating unintentionally.
By default, the BF-11 is supplied with a 45-degree handle, but a 55-degree version is available on request. If you wish to weld the twistlock permanently to the deck without using the Deck Socket DF-31, we recommend first removing the zinc layer and heating the steel to 300 °C before welding.
A twistlock at the bottom is used to fix a container to a fixed surface, such as a deck or steel frame. This locks the container in one position.
The Dovetail Twistlock BF-11 is placed in the corner points under the container and locks it to the structure.
This prevents shifting during transport or use, for example on a ship or platform.
A stacking twistlock is used to stack containers on top of each other. A dovetail twistlock is used to fix a container to a surface.
The difference lies in the application:
stacking twistlock → between two containers
dovetail twistlock → between container and structure
As a result, the shape, mounting and use case differ.
A base plate is used when the twistlock needs to be removable. The plate is permanently mounted on the deck or frame, while the twistlock can be slid in and out later.
You see this, for example, on a ship where containers are transported at times and loose cargo at others. The twistlocks can then be temporarily removed so they're not in the way.
The BF-11 uses a DF-31 base plate for this. This means the twistlock can be quickly removed when not needed.
This is practical for changing cargo or multi-purpose use of the deck.
Yes, a twistlock can be permanently mounted by welding it to a structure. This is done when the container's position is fixed and doesn't change.
When welding, the protective coating on the steel needs to be locally removed, and the correct processing temperature needs to be observed.
A fixed mounting is robust, while a base-plate solution is more flexible in use.
